Casual Friday #29

If your somewhere in the world that doesn't get the news that happens in my region, the New England area of the States got blasted with an extremely early Winter storm. Due to the fact that most of the leaves were still in many overgrown trees long over due for trimming and upkeep, in which you'd think the power company would have learned from the last storm that came through, many many branches and trees came down from the weight on the limbs and took many many power lines and utility wires along with them. Most of our state has been without power for a week and some areas are still without.

Although I got my power back, and eventually had my internet/cable line replaced the other day, it was a long week in which I wasn't able to get much work done. The daylight hours were spent outside clearing trees and brush from around the house and then try to get some drawing done by flashlight at night. ...and not very successfully. But with a clip board in hand, myself wrapped in a big puffy blanket, and sitting on the couch in front of the windows, I did this quick Casual Friday piece of an Orc. It was drawn on Friday but I haven't been able to post it until now.

I remebered drawing some Orcs back in the early 90's and not really liking them and thought I'd like to relax for 20 minutes and see what I could do now. I've posted an old photo copy of one of those old Orcs. I believe it was in color and probably will ink and color up this new Orc when I get the chance. IF I get the chance that is. I've been adding more and more work lately and with other domestic projects on the near horizon, I may be finding less and less time to do extra stuff. Unfortunately that may include commissions. Sorry to those hoping to get something anytime soon, but we'll see.

So here they are. The old Orc from 91', and the new Orc from the other day. This one isn't a soldier, he's more of the carrier / pack mule / laborer type of Orc.

I call him Ferno.

CECE Promo Card #8... and Finished.

Well, here it is. All finished, finally.
Yes, that took forever. That'll happen when your learning as you go but, I don't think it came out so bad. I would like to have had more time to fuss around with it, like tones and color variations to help pop the main character more, but maybe next time.
I'll probably have prints made up for this as well to bring to the con and have up for sale in a few weeks.

It's been fun

CECE Promo Card #6

Tuesday 11:00 am
Ok, I was a little slow getting up today but I've got the ball moving and I've got  a few good hours in already.

I remembered Shard has a big Scorpion tattoo on his back so I designed and drew that separately and I'll add it as an overly later on in the color process. This is only my second or third thing I've colored on the computer and a few months since the last one, so your not getting any Artist's tips from me on this one. I've got my How to Color Comics reference book open to help remind me how to do this correctly and speed up the process.
Up to this point I've got all my main Flats in and I'm ready to continue on.

I would love to have used this piece as a practice subject to learn how to digitally paint, as that's what I'm really interested in learning. But this has to ship out at some point.

How-To #5; CECE Promo Card #5

Monday 4:30 pm

My work day seems to be based around meals, snacks, and food. Mexican strikes again as I just enjoyed a great snack of nachos. With a Diet Mountain Dew chaser to counter the effects of getting up at an unholy hour.

Here's the scan of the card now fully Inked. I mostly used a brush and various sizes of Microns and now it's ready for the next stage. From here on in it will all be computer work.

I will need to take a break at this point as the clock is telling me real life needs to start happening soon. I hope to get back to this tonight and maybe get one more post in before bed.

Until then...

How-To #4; CECE Promo Card #4

Monday, 1:00 PM

Lunch was good, lots of leftovers from the Mexican themed party we had over the weekend.

... And I decided to go with Card "A". The main reasons were; even though the action in B was better, the figure looked a bit out of control and didn't quite fit with Shards character. Card A's figure being more in control with a steady stance felt more right. The flow of the chain whip in card A also felt better and less crowded than it is in card B. On top of all that, lately, in honor of Frazetta's passing, I've been meaning to do a piece where the main subject had their back to the camera. (something he did often) Seeing as how I already have pics of shards face I thought this would be a good time to switch things up.

What I did was take the rough in Photoshop and add it to one of my Trading Card masters that has all the measurements and crop marks all ready worked out. Here I can adjust the piece, move the figure around a bit, adjust the size or whatever. I then turn the dark pencil lines into a very light Blueline drawing and print the whole thing out on good paper. This is where I go at it with some tight pencils and figure out the little details.

I was having a bitch of a time with the dead (Ogre's?) left hand and redrew that thing over and over. I finally broke out the camera and took a ref photo to make it easier on myself. Now that I have it tight enough and to a point where I'm happy with it, I'll move on to the next stage.
